What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder characterized by:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Cognitive issues
  • Insomnia

Fibromyalgia mostly affects women. There is currently no known cure for the condition. However, pain management treatment options are available.

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many cannabinoid compounds derived from the cannabis plant, which is also known as hemp or marijuana.

CBD is thought to play a role in:

Hence, CBD is an appealing alternative treatment for pain disorders such as fibromyalgia. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved CBD as a treatment option for fibromyalgia.

CBD for fibromyalgia

There are currently no published studies that look specifically at the effects of CBD on fibromyalgia. However, some research does look at the overall effects of cannabis on fibromyalgia. A combination of other chemical contents in the cannabisplant may synergize the positive effects of CBD and confer additional benefits.

CBD for fibromyalgia pain

A 2016 study indicated that a lack of endocannabinoids might be at the root of chronic pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia (1). Taking CBD may mitigate this deficiency, explaining the compound’s success in alleviating chronic pain. A 2017 study indicated that CBD might counteract pain by reducing the hypersensitivity of cells surrounding the nerves (2).

A 2019 Dutch study found that Bediol, which is high in both CBD and THC, was shown to bring relief to a more significant number of people compared to the placebo (3). Use of Bedrocan or Bediol, both high-THC varieties, significantly improved pressure pain thresholds when compared to the placebo (3). In contrast, Bedrolite, which is high in CBD and low in THC, does not relieve spontaneous or evoked pain (3).

In a 2019 Israeli study, hundreds of people with fibromyalgia, mainly women, were given medical cannabis for six months (4). All the participants began with a low dosage of cannabis, and dosages were increased gradually throughout the study(4). The median approved dosage of cannabis started at 670 mg per day(4). At six months, the median recommended dosage of cannabis was 1,000 mg per day(4). The median approved dosage of THC was 140 mg, and the median approved dosage of CBD was 39 mg per day(4). At the beginning of the study, 52.5 percent of participantsdescribed their pain level as high. At the 6-month follow-up, only 7.9 percent of participants reported high levels of pain(4).

CBD for fibromyalgia sleep problems

A 2011 study investigated 56 people with fibromyalgia, mostly women (5). The participants were either cannabis users or not cannabis users(5). Two hours after using cannabis, cannabis users experienced benefits such as reduced pain and stiffness, as well as an increase in sleepiness(5). They also score slightly higher in mental health than non-users(5).

How to use CBD

You should follow dosage instructions carefully to avoid potential adverse effects. It’s advislble to begin with a lower dosage and carefully monitor your body’s reaction.

There are several ways that you can consume CBD, including:

Smoking or vaping

Smoking or vaping CBD-rich cannabis is the fastest way to get immediate pain relief. This is because smoking or vaping enables you to directly inhale CBD from the cannabis plant, absorbing it into your bloodstream and lungs. Effects can last up to 3 hours.

There may be respiratory risks of smoking or vaping CBD. People with asthma or lung conditions should not use this ingestion method.

Edibles are foods prepared with the cannabis plant, or cannabis-infused butter or oil. It may take longer to experience symptom relief, but the effects of edibles can persist for up to 6 hours.

Oil extracts

Oil extracts can be applied topically, taken orally, or dissolved under the tongue.

CBD oils can be infused into topical balms or creams and applied directly to the skin. These CBD products can be useful for reducing inflammation and external pain.

CBD side effects

CBD is relatively safe. However, you may experience some side effects, including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Appetite changes
  • Weight changes

There are also concerns that CBD, like grapefruit, may interfere with the ability of the liver ot break down cytochrome P450 (CYPs). This group of enzyme is essential to drug metabolism. Hence, CBD may interact with some dietary supplements, over-the-counter aids, and prescription medications – especially those that warn against grapefruit consumption. It is important to follow proper guidelines on CBD dosage for pain management.

Researchers are still investigating whether CBD is effective for fibromyalgia symptoms. Until more is known about CBD, traditional fibromyalgia treatment is recommended.

Is CBD Legal?Hemp-derived CBD oil products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal at the federal level. However, they are still illegal under specific state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are currentlyprohibited on the federal level but are permissible under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of the places you travel. Remember that the FDA does not approve nonprescription CBD products, and maybe inaccurately labeled.
