Cannabidiol (CBD) oil contains CBD extracts from the cannabis plant. Unlike the other cannabinoid compound termed tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t have psychoactive effects. Some people use CBD to ease pain and inflammation associated with chronic conditions, including arthritis.
CBD oil affects brain activity by interacting with the endocannabinoid receptors, termed CB1 and CB2, to reduce pain and inflammation. CB1 receptors are readily expressed in the central nervous system and regulate mood, memory, coordination, and appetite. On the other hand, CB2 receptors are readily expressed in the immune system and are therefore responsible for the body’s response to pain and inflammation.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, approximately 80% of arthritis patients reported that they are either currently using CBD, have used it previously, or are considering using it to help manage arthritis pain. CBD oil is thought to mitigate arthritis symptoms by relieving pain and inflammation as well as reducing secondary symptoms such as poor coordination and mood.
CBD oil for rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system attacks your joints, causing inflammation.
CBD oil can ease RA symptoms by interacting with the CB2 receptor. Also, the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD could help to diminish or halt the progression of RA, which would otherwise gradually cause permanent joint damage.
In people with rheumatic diseases, including RA, CBD may help:
- Improve sleep
- Curb morning pain (but not the overall pain level)
- Lower joint inflammation (but not joint stiffness)
CBD for osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that affects joint cartilage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It often affects the knee, hip, and thumb joints.
A 2017 study showed that CBD could prevent osteoarthritis pain and joint neuropathy by decreasing joint inflammation and also by protecting the nerves.
How to choose CBD oil?
There are many different CBD oil products, and the amount of CBD in them may differ. When choosing a CBD oil, make sure it includes a full list of ingredients.
The different forms of CBD oil include:
- Topical CBD oil or lotion
- CBD oil tinctures
- CBD mouth spray
- CBD dietary supplements or capsules
If you aim to target a specific area, CBD oil is your best bet. However, if the pain is all over, then a tincture or supplement may provide the most relief. It is also important to follow proper guidelines on CBD dosage for pain management.
The Arthritis Foundation recommends the capsule, mouth spray, and tincture forms of CBD oil. The topical application of CBD gel isalso able to relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
CBD is a promising treatment for arthritis symptoms. However, more research is needed to understand the benefits of CBD oil in arthritis management.
Is CBD legal?Hemp-derived CBD (with less than 0.3% THC) isauthorized on the federal level. However, they are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are prohibitedfederally but are legal in some states. Check your state’s laws and those of places you travel. Keep in mind that non-prescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and maybe inaccurately labeled.
